“Helping people to find and follow Jesus.”

PURPOSE

Nothing is more important than knowing your purpose.  The beginning point for every congregation should be the question, “Why do we exist?”  Until you clearly define why you exist, you have no direction and no compelling motivation for your ministry.  The five purposes that the church leaders have identified for Westheights Community Brethren In Christ Church are WORSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, DISCIPLESHIP, MINISTRY, and EVANGELISM.  These purposes will continue to give direction to our church.  Too often churches are silently driven by tradition or history or personalities or programs instead of the purposes God has set for His church.

Paul said, 1 Corinthians 3:10, “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder.”  As any builder knows, the foundation will determine the size and strength of what you are able to build.  In the church, if we build on the right foundation, then the church will grow and have strength.  It is too easy to get sidetracked from God’s purpose and find ourselves involved in second place efforts.  We want to stay focused and what we focus on will be determined by the above stated purposes.

At Westheights we understand, if we want our church to make an impact on our community, we must major on the majors.  The secret of being effective is knowing what really counts, then do what really counts, and not worry about all the rest.  It is amazing to me how many people have no idea what the main purpose of their church is.  As the old cliché says, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing!”

The older a church becomes the greater the danger that the main thing is no longer the main thing.  You will not be around Westheights very long before you will hear us talking about our purposes.  Focused light has real incredible power.  Diffused light has no power at all.  By focusing the power of light it can become a laser beam, it can even cut through steel.  We have clearly defined our purposes, so that we can be focused on our goal of impacting our community for Christ.

No one can join Westheights Community Church without first attending a Membership Class because we want every new member to clearly understand our purposes.  In the membership class we clearly explain our purposes.  If you are going to join a church, you want to know where it is going.  And our purposes state where we are going.

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but is the LORD’S purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21

“Then those people who  accepted what Peter said were baptized.  About three thousand were added to the number of believers that day.  They spent their time  learning the apostles teaching, sharing, breaking bread, and praying together.”

Acts 2:41-42 (NCV)

“So go and make followers of all people in the world.    Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.”

Matthew 28:19-20 (NCV)

Teacher, which command in the law is the most important?”  Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’  This is the first and most important command.  And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’”

Matthew 22:36-39 (NCV)
